(attendance: 48)
A major accomplishment of this
group was the publication in May 2008 of “A Bare Bones Reference
List for Small and Medium-Sized Public Libraries in Maine.”
The group also assisted in planning the Spring 2008 SMLD Council Meeting
which focused on reference and information services. Quarterly meetings
of reference librarians from public and academic libraries provided
opportunities for sharing information about MARVEL! and other databases.
The spring meeting at the Falmouth library included a comparative demonstration
of consumer health resources by University of New England staff.

Train the Trainer Workshop,
Portland Public Library (attendance:
19)
Using an innovative variety
of training techniques, former State Library Reference Librarian Elaine
Stanley conducted a workshop for reference librarians and other staff
about group trainings. The workshop covered multiple learning styles
and paired them with appropriate teaching styles. The workshop held
Oct. 30, 2007 at the Portland Public Library was so well received that
it was offered again at the spring 2008 Council Meeting.
Weeding Workshops
(attendance: 11)
Two workshops were held during
the year – at the Ogunquit Memorial Library on Nov. 26, 2007 and at
Soldier’s Memorial Library in Hiram on March 18, 2008. Each session
included an overview of collection development policies and procedures
followed by hands-on weeding and a discussion. Hundreds of books were
weeded during these sessions – adult fiction in Ogunquit and children’s
picture books in Hiram.
Goal
III. ENCOURAGE RESOURCE SHARING AND REGIONAL COOPERATION
In partnership with the Portland
newspapers and a steering committee of Maine organizations, work was
begun on a Literary Map of Maine
to be published in the “Maine Sunday Telegram” during the summer
of 2008. The idea for the map was initiated by the SMLD Public Relations
Committee, and based on a similar project conducted by the New York
Times in 2005. Readers submitted over 160 titles with Maine settings.
In addition to the print map, an online version was also being developed.
This online map will expand as new titles are submitted, and will contain
links to library catalogs and partner organizations. Partners for the
project include the Maine Humanities Council, the Maine Women Writers
Collection, the University of Maine, and the Maine Historical Society.
Initiated by a member library,
a new meeting group was formed among IT staff. The first meeting
was held at the Falmouth Memorial Library on November 29, 2007 for IT
librarians and Susie Strout, the statewide Maine School and Library
Network Circuit Rider. Among the topics discussed: IT staff responsibilities,
training, and new or developing library technologies. Additional meetings
were held on: Feb. 28, Walker Memorial Library, Westbrook; and May 1,
2008 at the Parsons Memorial Library in Alfred. (attendance: 26)
Goal IV.
FOSTER LITERACY
Children’s and Young Adult
Book Review Meetings (attendance: 264)
These monthly meetings at the
Portland Public Library are attended by school and public librarians
who review new books received for the Maine Examination Collection,
and also discuss current children’s services issues. Participants
kept the books they reviewed for their library collections, as many
as 240 books annually. Volunteers processed the review books
received, a total of 2,618 books and audiovisuals from 72
publishers, an increase of 19% over last year. Librarians reviewed 73%
of the titles received.
Family Summer Reading Celebration
Authors Laura Rankin, Sarah
L. Thomson, and Brian Lies read from their books at the 7th
Annual SMLD Celebration for summer reading participants held August
17, 2007 at the Seashore Trolley Museum in Kennebunkport. A scavenger
hunt based on the summer reading theme “Get a Clue @ Your Library”
offered book prizes for the 444 children who participated. Adults and
children enjoyed free rides on the restored historic trolleys, a Mystery
Skit by Crossroads Youth Star Camp, a Library Book Cart Drill Team,
and a performance by Magician Peter Boie. Over 1,000 children and their
families attended the celebration.
Traveling Cream
of the Crop Children’s and YA Book Collection
Compiled by a volunteer committee
of SMLD librarians for the annual “Reading Round-Up of Children’s
and Young Adult Literature Conference,”
a collection of outstanding new books was loaned to the following schools
and libraries: Belfast Free Library (July); Northeastern Maine Library
District (August); Rangeley Public Library (September); Carrabassett
Valley Public Library (October); Brown Memorial Library, Clinton (November);
Canaan Public Library (December); Massabesic Middle School, Waterboro
(January); West Buxton Public Library (February); Kennebunk Elementary
School (March); Bangor Public Library (April/May) and Rockport Elementary
School (June).
Goal
V. IMPROVE COMMUNICATION AMONG LIBRARIES, LIBRARY
ORGANIZATIONS, AND OTHER GROUPS
Orientation For New SMLD
Members (attendance: 12)
The annual orientation for
new librarians and trustees was held October 11, 2007, at the Portland
Public Library. Participants were shown a video about SMLD’s history
and services; provided with information packets; and informed of district
policies and procedures. The session concluded with a tour of regional
library services provided by PPL, SMLD’s Area Reference and Resource
Center.
Newsletters
“News Notes,” the
District’s newsletter for member libraries, was published and mailed
to member libraries in July and September 2007, and January, April and
June 2008. These newsletters are also published on the SMLD web site.
Each issue includes a calendar, and news concerning SMLD libraries and
statewide library events.
Goal VI.
FOSTER IMPROVED LIBRARY SERVICE
A sub-committee of the SMLD
Reference Librarians with input from the Bangor and Maine State Libraries
produced a 2nd edition of the “SMLD Bare Bones Reference
List for Small and Medium-Sized Public Libraries in Maine.”
Among the changes from the 1988 edition were the inclusion of children’s
materials and an extensive list of freely available websites.
SMLD librarians Elizabeth Doucette
from the Curtis Library in Brunswick; James Charette, Burbank
Branch, Portland Public Library, and Susan Trent, Scarborough Library
Trustee served on the selection committee for the statewide Library
Makeover program. Charette and Trent also assisted in the makeovers
themselves. The Hurd Library in North Berwick was one of the five
libraries selected.
Former City Librarian Victoria
Smith received the SMLD Certificate of Appreciation at the Spring
2008 concil Meeting. Smith was nominated for her work on many state,
regional and national committees including the American Library Association’s
Newbury Committee, Maine’s Reading Round Up and Cream of the Crop
committee, the SMLD Executive Board, and Maine’s statewide purchasing
committee SCOOP.
Library administration, building
design, programming, Friends and trustee information are included in
the SMLD
Professional collection of 627 books, videos and audiocassettes.
Circulation was down to 102 due in part to a decision made to downsize
District collections and refer requests to the State Library.
-----------------------------------------------------
AREA REFERENCE AND RESOURCE
CENTER
The Portland Public Library
serves as the SMLD Area Reference and Resource Center (ARRC) and receives
state aid for providing interlibrary loan, backup reference service
and free borrowers’ cards for SMLD libraries and patrons to directly
access collection and electronic resources. For the second consecutive
year lending at the Portland Public Library system grew significantly.
Overall lending rose 9% and included gains in all major categories and
type of materials.
The Interlibrary Loan
Department reports that FY 07-08 was a banner year with requests greatlyahead
of last year's figures -- over 25,000 requests, a seven year high. 61
% of thoserequests were from libraries in the Southern Maine Library
District. PPL filled 43%of requests from its own holdings (up from 40%
last year). In addition 337 libraries requested items from PPL for the
first time. The biggest innovation was the lending
of audiovisual items to other libraries
The Reference Department
added Credo Reference
to its databases offerings. This database searches hundreds of reference books
on subjects from art to technology, and includes full text articles
from dictionaries, encyclopedias, images, animations, and art reproductions.
It is available from home computers using a PPL card number. The popular
language database Rosetta Stone
was eliminated because the publisher decided not to make it available
to public libraries.
The Circulation Department
reports that of the77,571 PPL borrowers cards,23,968 are from SMLD borrowers.
During the year 2,871 new cards were issued to SMLD borrowers
–a 41% increase over last year. Much of this growth can be attributed
to the increase in the PALs program (Partner Area Libraries)who issue
PPL cards at their locations. The PALs program, which started as a pilot
project last year, currently has 22 participating libraries. Many patrons
take advantage of this program in order to access PPL’s popular subscription
databases and downloadable audiobooks through the assistance and convenience
of their familiar community libraries.

MAINE REGIONAL LIBRARY SYSTEM
PROJECTS
The three library Districts
in the Maine Regional Library System -- Central, Northeastern and Southern
--
worked together on the following
projects and programs.
LIBRARY MAKEOVERS
Makeovers were conducted in
five small public libraries during the year: New Vineyard Public
Library (July 17, 2007); Hurd Library in North Berwick (August
3, 2007); Underwood Memorial Library in Fayette (May 16, 2008);
Canaan Public Library (May 30, 2008), and the Pembroke Library
Association (June 13, 2008). This year the program was expanded
to include all three regional districts. Thanks to a New Century Community
grant, each library received a $ 200 stipend. A total of 17 libraries
applied.
Makeovers
were completed during one day by a team who removed and re-arranged
furniture, weeded collections, and discarded equipment to make the libraries
more inviting and functional. Each library received a written report
with recommendations for future purchases and projects. Team members
included Interior designer Cori McGrath and Richard Tucker from Tucker
Library Interiors; District Consultants Bonnie Dwyer, Shirley Helfrich
and Valerie Osborne; Portland Branch Manager Jim Charette; Farmington
Public Library Director Melanie Coombs Taylor; and Scarborough Public
Library trustee Susan Trent.
LIBRARY SPOTLIGHTS
Members of the three regional
library district public relations committees selected libraries for
the “Spotlight” section of the Maine Libraries website http://www.maine.gov/libraries/. Each library receives a special banner
and marketing materials for the month. The following libraries were
featured this year: Bangor Public Library (July 2007);
Mark & Emily Turner Memorial Library, Presque Isle (August); Fryeburg
Public Library (September); Waterville
Senior High School Media Center (November); Farmington Public Library (December), Maine Regional Library
System [for 35th Anniversary]
(January 2008); Gardiner Public Library (February); The Southwest Harbor
Public Library (March); Wells
Reserve Coastal Resource Library (April);
Rockland Public Library (May); and Garbrecht
Law Library, USM, Portland (June).
PUBLIC AWARENESS
CAMPAIGN
Humorist Tim Sample and award-winning
Maine librarians were featured during Maine Libraries
Week at the
State Capitol on January 15,
2008. Exhibits in the Capitol included MARVEL! resources and a cake
in recognition
of the Maine Regional Library
System’s 35th anniversary as well as a guessing jar for
the number of Maine public libraries. Sample spoke during the press
conference about his support of the databases and unveiled a MARVEL!
DVD in which he and Rockport
librarian Molly Larson appeared. DVDs were given to all Maine legislators.
Many legislators and state
office workers stopped at the exhibit although numbers were down this
year because of
a trip scheduled the same day
for new legislators. The event was covered TV Channels 6 and 2.
During the year copies of the
MARVEL! DVD were given to all public libraries and school districts,
HSLIC
members and academic libraries.
It has been shown on cable stations throughout the state. It is useful
for introducing MARVEL! to trustees, new staff, faculty, Friends, town
staff and others. The DVDs were paid for out of Rural Sustainability
funds and District funds. Large cut-outs of Tim Sample were produced
by a Florida printer, and used in library exhibits to attract attention
to MARVEL! resources.
TRUSTEE FORUMS
(attendance: 107)
A steering committee of trustees
from 6 libraries began work on revitalizing the Maine Library Trustee
Association with funding support from a New Century Community grant.
The committee worked with Steve Nichols, president of the Maine Library
Trustee Association, and the District Consultants on a series of five
Forums held at public libraries in Casco, Ellsworth, Rockland, Springvale,
and Waterville. Each Forum consisted of demonstrations about the MARVEL!
databases and WebJunction resources. These were followed by discussions
of seven case studies based on real life examples from Maine libraries.
In
addition to the Forums, the committee produced an online newsletter
for trustees and began updating the trustee website. A year end assessment
by the group concluded that the Forums should be expanded next year.
PUBLIC LIBRARY DIRECTORS’
INSTITUTE AND ORIENTATION
Library directors in their
positions three years or less participated in an orientation on June
9, 2008, at the Maine State Library. The full day session consisted
of a library tour, presentations by state library staff, and a sharing
session. Seventeen new directors attended this year.
Massachusetts library systems
consultant Cheryl Bryan was the guest speaker at the 12th
Annual Public Library Directors’ Institute held June 10, 2008 at the
Augusta Civic Center. Bryan’s presentation “The Library as Commons”
featured library facilities from around the country. Over 50 library
directors attended the conference which included three breakout sessions
on readers’ advisory, building assessment, and creative programming.
A lively discussion ”Apples and Oranges” about library statistics
resulted in the formation of a committee to help develop standardized
methods of reporting. Adding to the Institute rapport was a lunchtime
game of Library Jeopardy organized by the Northeastern District.
READING ROUND-UP OF CHILDREN’S
& YOUNG ADULT LITERATURE
Keynote speaker Pat Feehan
from the University of South Carolina spoke about how to deal with aliteracy
at the 19th annual RRU held April 17, 2008 at the Augusta
Civic Center. Over 350 librarians and authors participated in twelve
workshop sessions and had the first opportunity to view the new “Cream
of the Crop” collection of children’s and young adult books. A highlight
of this conference is the presentation of Maine children’s book awards
including the Lupine, Katahdin and Chickadee awards.
SCOOP PURCHASING COOPERATIVE
The SCOOP agreement covers
three years and is open to vendors dealing in library books, supplies,
furniture and equipment. This year an open enrollment for new vendors
was offered in the spring.
